The June 27 evening featured the Tony-winning Avenue Q score performed in jazz, classical and "other surprising arrangements." Mary Ann McSweeney, who plays bass in the Avenue Q orchestra, will be the musical director for the concert, which will boast a host of special guest stars to be announced at a later date...

LIGHTS ARE BRIGHT ON 'AVENUE Q'
Source: Yale Daily News

With graduation looming just over a month away, many nervous seniors may find that the first song in the hit Broadway musical "Avenue Q," "What can I do with a B.A. in English?" hits just a bit too close to home.

But it is at least a little heartening to know that in the case of Bobby Lopez '97, the writer of that song, the answer to that question was to become a Tony Award-winning composer...

TONY WINNING AVENUE Q COMPOSERS JEFF MARX & ROBERT LOPEZ PERFOMRED IN CONCERT AT BIRDLAND NOV. 29, 2004

On November 29, 2004, the Tony Award-winning songwriting team Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx sang their hit songs from Avenue Q, along with some unknown "trunk songs" at Birdland (315 West 44th Street).  This was the first time the duo performed a full concert in public.  They were also joined on stage by some Extremely Special Guests!  The evening was part of The Winter Season, presented by Jim Caruso in association with TheaterMania.com, which features top Broadway and cabaret performers at the world-class music room.

Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx created and wrote all the songs for the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q, which won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical.  Before it moved to Broadway, Avenue Q enjoyed a sold-out run Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, where it received the season's Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical.  In 2000, Bobby and Jeff won the coveted Ed Kleban Award for Lyrics for Kermit, Prince of Denmark, a proposed Muppet Movie based very, very loosely on Hamlet.  They wrote and orchestrated two shows for Theatreworks/USA (Reading Rainbow and Ferdinand The Bull), plus a handful of children's songs for The Disney Channel.  They are currently working on a musical comedy film for Universal Pictures, and a stage musical based on a particular religion with Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park. The writing team is eagerly anticipating the September 2005 opening of a second company of Avenue Q in Steve Wynn's new hotel, Wynn Las Vegas.  Jeff and Bobby both write lyrics and they both write music, together, in the same room, at the same time.  They met in 1998 in the BMI Workshop, which they recommend highly to any aspiring musical theater writers.

BIRDLAND has been a world-class music room on the Manhattan nightclub scene since 1949.  Jazz superstars Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dinah Washington, and more recently Ann Hampton Callaway, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli and Tito Puente have all performed on the BIRDLAND stage.  The room offers top-flight music in a world class setting, good sight lines and acoustics, and a menu featuring award-winning Southern cuisine.  Most recently, it's become the home of Jim Caruso's Cast Party, the weekly Monday late night showbiz gathering featuring impromptu performances by the Broadway, jazz and nightclub crème de la crème.
